# Getting Started

## What is Schema Service?

The Forge Schema Service is a centralized repository for managing schemas
within the Autodesk Platform. It enables you to:

* **Publish and read schemas** that describe the structure and constraints of data.
* **Version schemas** so consumers always reference a specific revision.
* **Tag resources** for discovery and classification.

Schema Service facilitates meaningful data exchange between systems by making
schemas accessible to both data producers and data consumers.

## Authentication

All Schema Service endpoints require a valid access token. Obtain a
**2-legged (client credentials)** token by calling the Authentication API
with your Client ID and Client Secret:

```bash
curl -X POST 'https://developer.api.autodesk.com/authentication/v2/token' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded' \
  -d 'grant_type=client_credentials' \
  -d 'client_id=YOUR_CLIENT_ID' \
  -d 'client_secret=YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET' \
  -d 'scope=data:read data:write'
```

The response contains an `access_token` field. Pass it in the
`Authorization` header of every subsequent request:

```
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN
```

> **Tip**
>
> Access tokens expire after the number of seconds indicated by the
> `expires_in` field. Request a new token before the current one expires.
